Hello everyone and welcome to October! The Long Dog Retreat has been busy once again finding new homes for our dachshund friends, and we are happy to share that we had 7+ adoptions since the beginning of September!! We’ll share with you which ones found a home at the end of the blog, but first we’d like for you to take a look at who is up for adoption and who could potentially be the next member of your family!!
Ginger is a dachshund-beagle mix who is 11 years old and weighs about 18 pounds. Ginger is red with a lot of gray in her face. She is a snuggler! There is nothing that she likes better than to be in her foster Mom’s lap. She is crate trained but loves sleeping with her Foster Mom. She is good with both men and women and is great when people come to the house. She is good with the other foster dogs. She loves to give kisses and go for walks. Because of her age, Ginger has slight arthritis. She takes a daily aspirin to help with pain.
Macaroni is the cutest litte guy! He only weighs 10 pounds and has adorable floppy ears. He is a bit reserved at first but bonds quickly to anyone willing to give him a belly rub or ear scratch. He is a senior gentleman and expects the finer things out of life….naps, snacks and attention. He would do fine as an only dog or with a dog buddy. He is a little protective of his food but hey…when you weigh 10 pounds you need every delicious morsel you can get. Not recommended for homes with small children.
Heidi is a sassy senior gal looking to start a new adventure in life. She has always lived with other dachshunds and gets along well with them. She would love to be a spoiled princess and be allowed on furniture, in your bed and on your lap. Heidi likes going for leisurely strolls in the grass, napping and mealtime. She doesn’t bark too much but when she does you will be amused by her cute little “voice”. Heidi is a bit of a chubby sausage and could stand to lose about 2 pounds. Because of her age, she would do better in a home with no small children. She is tiny and travels well in a car.
Stanley Louis Rockstar is new to our group. He is one cool dude 10yr old from LA; Louisiana that is. Stanley is a larger dachshund as he is a a true standard size fella with a lovable demeanor. Stanley loves to snooze in his special comfy cot, walk around the yard and go for car rides. He weighs 19 pounds and is very friendly. Stanley has a unique medical condition. It is called heart worms. They are not super common up north but in Louisiana they are rampant. The saddest part is that Stanley’s condition was completely preventable. Just by giving your dog a monthly pill, they never have to go through what Stanley does. Stanley will need a special home but his condition is treatable and IS NOT CONTAGIOUS.
Bitsy is an 8 year old red snugglebug… oops, I mean dachshund! She is a very easygoing dog and would be glad to have all of the attention you can give her, but she is happy and calm even when she has to be left alone for a while. Bitsy is potty trained and after a few days in her foster home she even started asking to go outside. She does not like to poop on leash, and needs some space to do her business. Bitsy is a little chubby at 19 lbs. She’s had her thyroid tested and it is normal, so she just needs regular walks and limited treats. She walks very nicely on a leash and is building up her endurance to go for longer walks. Bitsy will sit pretty to beg for treats, which is very cute, but don’t give in! She gets along fine with other dogs so long as they give her space. She seems to do fairly well with cats. Bitsy loves to chase flies in the house, have her belly rubbed, and cuddle. If you want a sweet little lap dog, she’s your girl!
TARA AND LEXIE
Lexie and Tara are a sweet and snuggly pair of senior sisters who have truly been given excellent and loving care their whole lives. When people find out they are 15 they are amazed because of their great health. Tara has some eye problems and Lexie takes a hormone replacement pill but other than that they are in wonderful health. They are only in rescue because their dad died and their mommy had to go into a nursing facility. They are use to the good life and pampering. These sassy redheads are looking for a great home. Do not let a number scare you off….they truly have a lot of love to give…for many years to come!
Chloe is a super size doxie diva who needs a special loving home. She is extremely obese and needs to lose almost 10 pounds! She currently has some trouble getting around due to infected feet but once she starts feeling better the weight should come off quickly. She is a loving dog who likes her toys, is a little frightened by other dogs, likes kids and loves her crate.
Nugget is a very handsome 7 yr old black tan dapple short hair doxie. He was surrendered partially due to excessive marking and anxiety. We are working with him on these issues but he needs a home where he is loved and shown patience.
Each one of these wonderful dachshunds have so much to give and we really want them to go into loving homes. If you are interested in learning more about each of these dogs and would like to fill out an application, please head to our website thelongdogretreat.org for more information!
Also, we would like to celebrate the ones who have found their forever homes, so congratulations to the following friends!!!
